Safety in Hot Weather

Every year people get sick, and in some cases die, from heat exposure. Air conditioning is the best way to prevent overheating, but if your outside enjoying the sun remember to do it safely.

Here are some tips to minimize the risk of illness due to heat exposure:

  1. Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol, caffeine and drinks high in sugar as these may actually cause you to loose more fluids.
  2. Dress For Heat – Stay away from tight fitting, dark clothing that traps heat. Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothing that allows sweat to evaporate and keeps you cool.
  3. Plan Outdoor Activities Carefully – Try to avoid activities outside during the hottest part of the day which occurs in the late afternoon around 4:00.
  4. Beware of Symptoms – Know the signs; paleness, heavy sweating, nausea, headache, cramps, dizziness, weakness, or fainting. If you or someone around you shows any of these symptoms, get indoors quickly, rest, hydrate, and take a cool shower or put a cool wet cloth over the face.
  5. Monitor Those at Higher Risk – Check in on elderly neighbors, young children, or others with high risk factors to make sure they are able to stay cool.
  6. Use Common Sense – You know your body better than anyone, so respect it’s limits and don’t push yourself in extreme heat.
